A self-massage is one of the most invigorating forms of relaxation. Massaging movements open up the muscles while stimulating blood flow, oxygenation, and lymphatic circulation in the body
When you think about how much work your body does for you every day, it makes sense to take care of it. But sometimes life gets busy and we can't find time for ourselves—and that's OK!
Why not start small by pampering yourself with the luxurious experience of a self-massage? A self-massage is one of the most invigorating forms of relaxation. It can also treat a variety of conditions, such as joint pain, headaches, back pain, sprains, and strains.
How? The massaging movements open up the muscles while stimulating blood flow, oxygenation, and lymphatic circulation in the body. This helps relieve muscle tension, stress, and pain! It’s no wonder massage therapy has been used for thousands of years to heal the body and mind.
Let’s talk about some self-massage techniques you can incorporate into your daily routine:
- Feet: Use a light, warming aromatherapy essential oil such as almond oil and apply it to your hands and rub together to warm. Start by massaging your big toe and work your way to the rest of your toes, eventually moving towards your heels. Increase the pressure as you feel comfortable doing so. You can even take a tennis ball and place it under your foot and roll back and forth from heel to toe.
- Legs, Hips, and Buttocks: Sit on the floor with your legs facing forward and take a tennis ball or foam roller and place it under your buttocks/hips/legs. Roll in circular motions while focusing on more tender areas.
- Neck and Shoulders: Use a light, warming oil and start massaging your neck and shoulders in circular movements. Make sure to properly knead the areas with the most tension. Apply further pressure with your fingertips to smoothen out tighter areas.
- Face: Press your fingers in the centre of your forehead and move them up and down in relaxing motions. Then, massage from the centre of your face to your cheeks and ears. Repeat the same towards your jawline.
It's hard to get your body to relax and let go of tension, especially when you're feeling rushed or hurried by the world around you. But if you practice self-massage techniques, they can help you achieve that relaxed state of mind and body that you crave.
